Les Bastides
Let yourself be charmed by the bastides of the Périgord, villages and small towns dating from the 13th and 14th centuries:

- Monpazier (1 hr 12 mins)
Castles
Perched atop a hill or cliff, nestled amongst vineyards or along riverbanks, these magnificent buildings will transport you back through the centuries. Our local castles include:
- Château de Montaigne (15 mins): the home of the famous philosopher.
- Château de Gageac (28 mins): dating from the 12th century, it is situated on the Way of St James, between Sainte-Foy-la-Grande and Bergerac.
- Château de Duras (35 mins): a unique monument blending elements from the Middle Ages, the 17th century and the 18th century.
Many other châteaux are waiting for you further away along the Dordogne valley: Château de Beynac, Château de Castelnaud, Château de Biron...
Gardens
For a break surrounded by greenery, these gardens will delight visitors of all ages:
- Les Jardins de Sardy (10 mins) (photo): romantic gardens inspired by English and Italian styles, listed as ‘Jardins Remarquables’ since 2004. They offer a picturesque stroll ending with a lovely viewpoint and a pond in the distance. The tea room and its shaded terrace are a welcome treat at the end of the walk.
- Les Jardins de Marqueyssac (1 hour 40 mins): Set around a listed château, the gardens stretch over 6km of shaded walking paths, featuring rockeries, waterfalls and viewing points offering magnificent views of the Périgord. Not to be missed, but allow several hours for the visit. As a bonus, dogs on a lead are welcome.
Lakes and swimming
Lake Gurson (approx. 10 mins) is an artificial lake set in lush green surroundings near Villefranche-de-Lonchat in the Dordogne. Set in the heart of a forest of pine and oak trees, the Lac de Gurson site covers a total area of 58 hectares, comprising 12.5 hectares for the main lake and 3.5 hectares for the smaller lake. In addition to fishing, which is very popular at the site, a range of activities are available: tennis, hiking, cycling, archery and water sports.

Wine o'clock!
First and foremost... the wine!!
You are right in the heart of the Montravel AOCs and just a stone’s throw from other equally delightful AOCs: Bergerac, Pécharmant, Montbazillac...
Within 5 km of the gîte, you’ll find a few hidden gems well worth a visit, both for the tasting and the chance to chat.
We haven’t yet had the chance to visit them all but we’ve heard positive things about:
